A trip from Batumi to the Machakhela National Park, where, apart from the unique biodiversity of the Colchis forests, the beauty of the waterfall and the ruins of the fortress, we will visit friendly local people - winemaker Ilya, his dad Amirani and the rest of the family. We will eat a delicious dinner with Ajarian dishes in their house and taste the wine, which is made in a traditional way – in clay egg-shaped amphorae called “qvevri”. This method has been known for 8,000 years!
Our guide and the driver will pick you up from any place in Batumi at the agreed time and we will move away from the sea along the Chorokhi River towards the ever green mountains of the Machakhela National Park. The first stop is the Gvara Fortress, but to reach it we will have to climb many stairs. The views reward the hardships - it used to be an observation point guarding the order on the trade routes along the Chorokhi and Adjaristskali rivers that meet here. Entering the national park, we will see a monument to a shotgun, which was produced here in the 19th century and was famous for its reliability and helped the local population to maintain their "I" at a time when the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Tsardom fought for influence in this territory. From here we head to the village of Chikuneti, where an Ajarian highlander from grandfather Ilya runs his vineyard, but before we sit down to the table with him, we climb a hill, where twin waterfalls are hidden behind a wooden gate. The walk is challenging but very rewarding. When we return, Ilya will enthusiastically show you around his estate, show you houses that are over a hundred years old, you can swing on a “Instagram friendly” swing, drink wine. In the meantime his mom will set the table with typical Ajarian dishes that cannot be tasted anywhere else in Georgia, e.g. sinori, borano, pchalobio, or a dish with huba mushroom in the main role. Everything that appears on the table comes from the host's backyard bads.
After a satisfying feast, it is possible to buy the wine that you like. The return to Batumi takes place without stops, you are taken back to the places from which we picked you up.
